Story
Tokara Director’s Reserve Red 2016 is the defining flagship red wine of the South African wine estate based in Stellenbosch. The first thing you notice when those wine is first poured is its stunning and great depth to the colour. It displays an intense, but vibrant. garnet centre, circled by a lighter, ruby rim. The nose of the Tokara Director’s Reserve Red 2016 is as equally as intense as its colour, a rich and varied array of stewed red and black fruits, which are beautifully accompanied by notes of dried herbs and spices. Baking spices such as Vanilla and Tonka bean are notable aromas. There is then the earthy, mineral element which is shown in the form of a graphite note. On the palate, the wine hits the mouth with amazing clarity. Its clean and fresh. The notable flavours are those of fresh, dark cherry as well as black berries. Lastly there is the taste of ripe plum skins. There are balance tannins which is balanced by the fruit and makes for a great drinking bottle of wine. The notes of fruit skins and the fine, firm tannins all roll together into one for the added texture and complexity of the bottle. There is also a hint of the spice which was noted on the nose also detected in th mid palate. As Tokara will tell you – ‘we focus on the 2 greatest grape varieties in the world’ (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) … and this bottle of Director’s Reserve is made up of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon. So you can be sure that it has been given all the care, attention and respect it deserves. They are reflected in their three ranges – TOKARA Premium Collection, as blends across sites – TOKARA Reserve Collection, single vineyard offerings – TOKARA Directors Reserve, the very best and most expressive parcels used to create iconic blends that define their flagship wines.
