Story
Progetto Calcarius Hellen 2019 has a grassy minerality on the nose, like many natural wines but doesn’t fall short on the palate and with excellent balance, not too effervescent, fruity, slightly dry with great acidity for what it is. A steal for the price. Gear up for a bottle of Progetto Calcarius Hellen, it’s just too hard to put down. Somehow they found this level of acidity in Puglia, something we’ve not experienced until now. Love it.
Winemaking
The Progetto Calcarius Hellen organic red wine is made using spontaneous alcoholic fermentation without temperature control. This is the processing of mineralization, the salts present in the grapes in an organic form turn to mineral inorganic components the unstable composts of the must get a new stable and mineralized form in the wine. This process of spontaneous transformation provides the wine with all the natural components to create the sensorial profile of the liquid and also permit to the wine the ageing in the time.
Winemakers
This is a wine that’s created off the passion of two natural winemakers; Valentina Passalacqua and Danilo Marcucci. The heart of Calcarius project is in the awareness of the fundamental worth of the soil and the salt components and the synergistic relationship with the Mediterranean climate choosing the indigenous grapes of this piece of Puglia.
The Calcarius project vineyard takes roots in the Gargano area, in the community of Apricena where the calcareous draws and decides the life of the persons. This part of Puglia is generating form a calcareous platform with white colour or pink colour, made by compacted limestone rocks crystallized in the Superior Jurassic more than 150 millions of years ago and exactly in the Kimmeridgian geologic era. The land appears on the surface with the typical regolith rocks, which are the result of the limestones crushing and the dark and red clays created by chemical and physical processing of decomposition of these calcareous rocks.
Puglia, with its Tavoliere and its Murgia, is the longest region of Italy, but it’s also the region with the greatest coastal development, given that for about 800 km it is bathed by the sea. This presence offers an extremely stable and pleasant climate for most of the year. Therefore, ideal conditions for viticulture which in fact is among the most productive at a national level. 70% of the production is made up of red wines, among which the Negroamaro and the Primitivo are dominant. Among the white wines, on the other hand, the white Bombino, the verdeca and the white Malvasia are representative.
