Story
Bodegas Terras Gauda, O Rosal 2019 coming directly from Rias Baixas, Galicia. Sometimes known as Green Spain, the North-Western area is renown for Albariño. The DO (Denominación de Origen) was formed in 1988, it borders Portugal and has huge Atlantic influences. Relatively young in age the DO has seen huge success with the fresh and zesty style of white wine we have here now. A versatile wine, it goes well with Asian cuisine and tapas or just sitting out in the sun.
The process
The grapes come off of a mixture of vineyards varying in altitudes. The Albarino and Caino are grown on lower vineyards that are warmer adding ripeness. The Loureiro comes from a much higher vineyard that has a good diurnal range which helps retain acidity. The blend of vineyards and grapes provides a fantastic structure overall. Harvesting takes place in mid to late September and is by hand only, taking care to not crush the grapes when picked they are transported in small crates. The delicate processes really carry through to the juice in the bottle. The varieties are vinified separately. The separated juice for the O Rosal gets a cold soak before the ferment and then kicks off naturally with wild yeast. Once fermented, the wine is stabilised and bottled. The wine is fresh and fragrant for consumption without cellaring. It is super aromatic showing tropical tones, pears and zesty lemon. The pallet is crisp, fresh and textured. Accordingly to the winemaker, there is no need to decant this wine and is best served with Oysters. Muscles, Clams or Crab. Hard cheeses will also hold up pretty well. Founded in 1989, Terras Guada is a leader in the vinification of premium Albariño grapes in the Rosal valley. Albariño can also blended with varieties such as Loureira and Caiño Blanco, an heirloom white variety that the winery saved from extinction.
