Story
La Violetta Up! 2017 is sourced from three great shiraz sites in the “spice belt” south of Mt Barker, this release shows exceptional aromatic intensity, elegance and balance. Wonderful perfume, original in its fragrance, violets, earth, olives, salty liquorice, bonox and then the red and black berry fruits. Slippery texture, soft, juicy, mouth perfume and fine tannin, elevated on glossy brisk red fruits and spice. This wine is meat versatile and goes wonderfully with game, veal, lamb, and chicken.
Hand harvested, then destemmed without crushing. Fermentation was carried out in small open top fermenters, mostly with hand plunging of the cap, but also délestage by gravity. After pressing off skins, the wine matured for 12 months in new and seasoned French hogsheads (second and third use). No cold stabilisation, minimal fining. About the name: Up is a suffix commonly found in place names in Western Australia’s south-west, meaning “place of” in the indigenous Noongar dialect. This wine evokes the ancient granitic soils of its place of origin in the hills around Mount Barker.
La Violetta began producing small quantities of wine at Denmark, on Western Australia’s south coast, in 2008. Grapes are sourced from a handful of trusted growers with exceptional vineyards, some amongst the oldest in the state. The idea is to keep production at a small scale so that each wine is crafted with care. In 2010, La Violetta’s first release, 2008 La Ciornia, featured in Matthew Jukes’ Top 100 and Sarah Ahmed’s Top Five Australian wines. The wines are not entered into shows due to the limited volumes produced.
Before being lured west by the quality of Great Southern grapes, winemaker Andrew Hoadley worked all over Australia’s cool and hot zones and in Piedmont, Abruzzo and Washington State. He now lives on Mt Shadforth, just out of Denmark town, and makes the wines in a small facility in the countryside.
