Story
In 1985 after beeing ten years abroad Karl Heinz Johner and his wife Irene founded a little Weingut (vineyard & winery) in their home village “Bischoffingen” in the Kaiserstuhl. His focus was set on the Burgundy-wines full of structure and pure elegance. Despite having to overcome problems relating to winemaking in the Kaiserstuhl and German wine laws the young Weingut soon established himself as a pioneer of a new German winestyle recognised as being of an international class. Today “Weingut Karl H. Johner” is considered to be one of the best estates in Germany and is well-known amongst most wine experts.
This wine is an entry level version of their main Pinot Noir (Blauer Spätburgunder). The grapes from this vintage come from all of the Löss soil vineyard sites planted with the traditional clones from the Kaiserstuhl, but also with clones from Burgundy. Intense canopy management, deleafing and green harvest to reach this level of intensity and body on the palate.
Flavours of cherries and red fruit with delicate underlying oak. Nice, elegant and soft on the palate. Mid-full bodied with a lovely finish.
