Story
Zevenwacht Wine Estate is owned by the Johnson family and is situated on the Southernmost slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. This beautiful property has its vineyards overlooking Cape Town and is influenced by its proximity to the ocean and the cooling South-Easter wind, making wines with great fruit purity and elegance. The sister property in the Banhoek Valley is a warmer site with heavier soils and provides cellar master, Hagen Viljoen, with more structured and powerful components to work with when blending. The Tin Mine Red is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvédre, all the vines are trellised on a seven-wire hedge system that allows for perfect containment of the sometimes vigorous growth habits of the Syrah and Grenache varieties. All the different varietals were fermented separately with regular pump-overs extracting intense colour and soft, pliable tannins. After fermentation the wine was pressed and racked to 2nd, 3rd & 4th fill French oak 500l barrels and aged for 12 – 16 months before blending. 2017 Zevenwacht Tin Mine Red is a full-bodied red wine, which is purple-red in colour, with a nose that exudes aromas of violets, dried spices and concentrated black prunes with a slow release of red cranberries and dark chocolate. The palate impresses with density on entry matched with persistent yet supple tannins and balanced acidity. Pair with grilled red meats, roasted lamb, barbecues and hard cheeses. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
