Story
Storica Negraro Rosso Veronese is a very appealing and richly fruity Veronese red wine from north-west Italy. Thanks to the traditional technique of drying grapes, the region of Negrar and S.Pietro Incariano has gained in importance. The resulting red wine is hugely increased in its concentration and richness. The partially raisined grapes give the fruit an extra special and unique depth the otherwise light and delicate aromas. Notably, these can be seen in the form of ripe cherries as well as sweet spices, like vanilla. In contrast to the mellow, light and fruity flavour, the palate boasts and richness. It’s intense, full of flavour and extremely well rounded. It has few, but soft, rounded tannins. The Storica Negraro Rosso Veronese is made in a part of Italy that is the land of the full and opulent Amarone grape, which is notoriously rich, full-bodied and full of powerful flavours, which usually comes with a fairly hefty price tag. This wine, with thanks to the Appassimento, really does give a nod to this style and can proudly stand next to its local partner and in turn, gives you a great value for money bottle of wine. It is a real bargain for a wine that boasts such. Complexity and bold flavours. Ideal as a wine consumed with a meal and food that can stand up to it at that. A roast dinner with all the trimmings would be a perfect companion to this style of Italian red, as would a platter of mature cheese. What is appassimento? (Decanter.com by James Button) Appassimento is central to the unique style of some of Veneto’s best-loved wines, including Valpolicella Ripasso and Amarone. It is the process of drying grapes in ventilated drying lodges (fruttai) over the winter months. Losing around 30% of their water content, the sugars and flavour compounds in the grapes are concentrated. In addition, acidity decreases while resveratrol and glycerin levels increase, lending balance, richness and a unique ‘glossy’ texture to the wines.
