Part of Philip Shaw’s Character series, The Idiot Shiraz 2017 is a James Halliday 5 Star Winery based in Orange, New South Wales. Not afraid to make a statement, this wine captures the playful, eccentric and unique elements of Shiraz from Orange’s cool climate. The Idiot does not follow the rules of convention; a fool to some, a genius to others. the Idiot embraces the unconventional and complex character of the shiraz. Pioneers of unconventional tradition! Philip Shaw has been making wine for 56 years. Twice International Winemaker of the Year and Australian Winemaker of the Year. The wines are estate grown and made at Koomooloo Vineyard. Sitting in one of the coolest and highest growing regions in Australia, Orange. The vineyard is unique for Australia with over 10 passes by hand. All the grapes are hand-sorted into the winery. Delivering wines of elegance, structure, power and the stamp of the dirt! Our land is farmed sustainably, creating an environment today better than yesterday. We guide our grapes thru to wine with as little intervention as possible! They know the journey. All grapes were de-stemmed and hand-sorted. Berries were split and tipped into open vats for fermentation. Native yeasts carried out primary fermentation imparting layers and depth. During fermentation, the wine was managed carefully to obtain balance and structure. The wine was pressed from its skins and seeds, and racked to oak for maturation. The wine was left to evolve in oak for 10 months before blending for bottling. The Idiot is a dark garnet with a purple hue. This cool climate Shiraz is true to its region and variety. It has a fragrant bouquet with juicy red fruits and blueberry. The palate is succulent yet elegant. It has bountiful fruit and spice finishing with fine savoury tannins. We hope you enjoy it!
