Story
Mas de Cadenet Rosé Sainte-Victoire 2018 is something seriously good. If you haven’t heard of or tasted Rose from Sainte Victoire, get a bottle of this now. Very soon this is going to be the region to drink. A slightly different blend than other Provence Rose. Favouring Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. The sub-region is considered a continental climate rather than Mediterranean. Climate has hot and dry summers with mild winters. Plenty of rainfall in Autumn and Spring with lots of sunshine throughout summer. The soil is poor but well-drained favouring low yield but intense fruit profile and structured wines. Pristine pale pink hue with a fresh flowers, fresh strawberries bouquet. Palate is crisp, dry and fruit-forward. Complex throughout, perfectly balanced and delicate, this wine is a real banger. Varieties are picked separately and early in the morning to keep the grapes cool, this helps the winemaking process. De-stemmed, crushed and then kept on skins. This is where that pale pink colour comes from, it also helps soften acidity. Fermentation in stainless steel at a low temperature, aiding the fresh fruit aromatics. Finally, the separate parcels are blended together and bottled. The bottles used are slightly different than other Provence offerings. Mas de Cadenet is found at the bottom of the Sainte Victoire mountain close to Aix-en-Provence. With winemaking tracing back to the Romans this area is steeped with history. The Negrel family acquired the estate in 1813 which has south-facing vineyards at 250m above sea level. Their best plots are marked by limestone and specifically planted to Syrah and Grenache. Mas de Cadenet produces 60% rose, 30% red and 10% white. Still run by the Negrel family, Guy is now in charge with the help of his children, Maud and Matthieu.
