Story
The 2014 Tinto Ponte das Canas is a blend of Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Alicante Bouschet aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This adds a layer of depth to the Dom Rafael. In a country steeped in winemaking history, the name Mouchao is synonymous with wines of distinction. The family-owned estate has been producing wine for over a hundred years and maintains the traditions established in 1901 when the winery was built. The distinctive character of Mouchão wines derives from three principal characteristics: the Alicante Bouschet grape, the specific terroir, and adherence to traditional winemaking methods. He built a high-ceilinged adobe winery (or “adega”) and a distillery was added to the winery in 1929, where until today Mouchão’s pomace brandy is produced. Today, the Herdade do Mouchão continues to be run by the descendants of the original family whose cellar and vineyard workers have been with them for generations. The process is, as it always has been, unhurried. The grape varieties are local, picked by hand and foot-trodden. In the ever-changing world of winemaking, Herdade do Mouchão, remains a traditional, family-run winery. The 2014 Herdade Do Mouchao, Ponte das Canas is a striking garnet colour, with mint evident on the nose, exhibiting dense and elegant aromas of white flowers and violets, black fruits, and spices. The palate is soft, fresh, with firm structure and very well balanced. A wine of distinct elegance.
