Story
Atelier Kramar Bohem is a very aromatic wine, this Tocai Friulano jumps out of the glass. Flavours of ripe peaches and wild spices with a subtle mineral backbone. Amazing length.
The story of this amazing orange wine starts in Slovenian region, Brda. The Atelier Kramar Bohem is produced by Katja and Matjaz, a husband and wife team who made their living as artists for many years (her as a painter, him as a sculptor) before building their dream ‘atelier’ on top of a beautiful hill in Brda, Slovenia 15 years ago. They happened to have wines on their property and were surrounded by winemakers and slowly fell into winemaking, something which they have switched to doing full time over the last five or so years, now producing some of the best natural Slovenian wines.
Viticulture here follows organic principles and the winemaking is very hands-off – the only addition is a little bit of SO2 during winemaking. They do tend to go for full expressions of their white grapes and hence always do a bit of skin contact (3 days) for more aromatic intensity as well as the fuller texture on the palate, with fantastic balance. Brda is the region most closely linked with Collio (Friuli) in Italy as it is just over the border. Many winemakers from both countries have vineyards on both sides. They farm vines of Merlot, Rebula, and Tocai Friulano on Ponca soils (marine fossils, sandstone, marl) which give the wine a typically salty, briny character and lovely tension. Complex, complex, complex.
