Story
2015 Anne Gros & Jean-Paul Tollot La 50/50 has wonderful aromas of blackberries, crushed stones, wild garrigue. Medium-bodied, suave; flavours of black cherries and plums. This wine pairs perfectly with grilled pork or lamb sausages; weekday hamburgers; any Mediterranean-inspired outdoor meal! ‘50/50’ describes the partnership of winemakers Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot—from the fields to the cellar, all work is divided equally The partnership of Burgundian winemakers Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot in the Minervois sets a new standard for quality and character in the Languedoc. Finesse and precision are the two main characteristics of these Minervois wines—words more often used to describe Gros’ Burgundian crus rather than the concentrated reds of the south. The cool elegance of Burgundy, the warm soul of southern France – winemaker Anne Gros (of Domaine Anne Gros in Vosne-Romanée) is without question crafting some of the more harmonious, captivating red blends in the Languedoc today. The estate’s 35 acres of old vines in Cazelles grow on a plateau at the foot of the Montagne Noir, 660 feet above sea level, the same altitude as Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. This breathtaking region boasts exceptional terroir, as both limestone and chalk-rich fossils are abundant. The winemaking is hand-harvested and destemmed; fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Aged also in the tank. The vineyards are a selection of fruit from a north-facing estate vineyard. Soils combine marl, limestone and sandstone. Grenache and Carignan’s vines are 30 to 40 years old; Syrah vines are 10+ years old. “Burgundian couple Anne Gros et Jean-Paul Tollot who work for separate family estates, wanted to do a joint project, so they looked in the Midi and found superb old Carignan vines in Minervois. This as a lovely spice with fresh peppery fruit and a fresh finish. There is southern warmth while retaining essential elegance. One for the barbecue”. Decanter
