Story
Azul y Garanza makes wine from a total of 40 hectares of vineyards scattered on various parcels located next to the desert area and the nature reserve Bardenas Reales in Navarra, in northern Spain. With the extreme natural conditions that this desert area has, unique to Navarra, Dani Sanches Nogue, Maria Barrena and Fernando Barrena make certified organic wine of high class – without the use of chemical agents either in vineyards or basements. Maria and Dani in particular, with their great experiences from both Spain, France, Australia, Argentina and South Africa, have finally found their course and philosophy of how they want their wines to be; True to its origin. It should also be mentioned that Dani makes wine in Montsant and Maria in Catalonia too. The Navarra district stretches across the southern half of the Navarre region. The vineyards are located at the foot of the Pyrenees, down towards the Eros valley. Navarra was previously best known for its rosé wines, but in recent years it has also produced red and white quality wines. The climate is continental with hot, dry summers and cold winters. The grapes were destemmed and fermented in open vats on the skins for 10 days. After pressing the wine is transferred to a clay amphora where it finishes fermentation. The amphoras come from the region of Extremadura in Spain and they have various sizes (900L, 750L, 500L). The wine stays on its fine lees in amphora for 6 months prior to bottling. Unfined, unfiltered, small sulphite addition at bottling.
The grapes come primarily from an old vineyard area called ‘San Isidro del Pinar.’ This particular wine is made from a single vineyard, very old bush vines in a very wild parcel. It is a low- yielding vineyard located in the influence area of the Bardenas Reales desert, the biggest desert in Europe. The very poor and arid clay-calcareous soil, the dry weather and the big contrast of temperature between the day and the night provide the grapes with high concentration and a perfect balance. The Azul Y Garanza Naturaleza Salvaje is a very nice brilliant yellow-orange colour with a great aroma of citrus, peach, herbs and flowers. Fresh, dry and delicate with fine bites. The lack of water during summer has concentrated the fruit resulting in a great balance between the degree and acidity. Drink today for fish, shellfish, vegetable dishes and cured meats.
